OVERVIEW
Buddies all over the globe, it has now become a known fact even by the very non-professionals in in medicine, nutrition and dietetics that liver, kidney, heart and other organ malfunction is now more connected to affluence in developing countries than ever before. Although recent researches in medicine and allied courses has come to support the idea that liver, kidney, heart and other organ malfunction incidence cuts across all socioeconomic strata. This is quite evident in reports of trend changes of behaviour over time in food consumption, life style, substance abuse et cetera within such societies of developing countries. Liver malfunction is more acquired than genetic/inherited. Take for instance in my hometown Owerri Imo State Nigeria, these medical problems have become so common with the affluent segments of the society to the extent that common people now make a caricature of the rich class. Some even gossip that "it is a punishment for the fraudulent public office holder", while still a few others say its a "bigman big trouble situation". Executive health is degenerating here. Still in Owerri, if you happen to question any medical doctor or even any common man in the street who suffers from liver problems? or the likes or say who died from liver failure? He will not hesitate to tell you that it is either the senator's wife, the rich tycoon living next gate, the former deputy governor's wife or even the governor's father or any other of his family member. Nothwistanding the fact that malaria ranks top as one parasitological disease with primary public health importace in Nigeria and HIV/AIDS has not helped matters either. In efforts to rebrand the health sector here, the federal govt. ministry of health should fashion out feasible strategic programmes to prevent and treat these emerging and re-emerging Non-Communicable Diet Related Diseases (NCDRD.) affecting essential organs as liver, kidney, heart and other organs. If strategic approaches are not put in place to avert potential epidermic as a result which will affect mostly the middle aged and elderly { and faster than ever trending towards the younger generation as behaviour changes in food consumption, lifestyle and et cetera factors comes effect }, the long term implications will be negative on longevity, mortality/morbidity rate of the work force and essentially socioeconomic life of the citizenry
PREVENTION/TREATMENT OF LIVER CANCER/MALFUNCTION
Cancer associated with the liver is prevented and treated with the consumption of vegetables like pumpkin,...... especially yellow and green vegetables. Liver cancer is associated with infection with hepatitis virus; high intakes of alcohol; iron overload; toxins of a mold (aflatoxin) or other toxicity. As alcohol abuse also disrupts every tissue's metabolism of nutrients. Liver cells lose effciency in activating vitamin D and alter their production and excretion of bile. Liver cells, too, suffer a reduced capacity to process and use vitamin A. More dramatic is alcohol's effect on folate. When excess of alcohol is present, the body actively expels folate from all of its sites of action and storage. The liver, which normally contains enough folate from to meet all needs, leaks its folate into the blood As the blood folate rises , the kidneys are deceived into excreting it, as if it were in excess. The intestine normally releases and retrieves folate continuously , but it becomes so damaged by folate deficiency and alcohol toxicity that it fails to absorb folate. Alcohol also interferes with the action of what little folate is left, causing a buildup in the blood of a compound suspected of involvement with many diseases, including heart diseases, stroke, and birth defects. Moreover, stomach cells oversecrete both acid and histamine, an agent of the immune system that produces inflammation.
ALCOHOL AFFECTS YOUR BODY FUNCTIONS
Upon exposure to alcohol, the liver speeds up its synthesis of fatty acids. Fat is known to accumulate in the livers of young men after a single night of heavy drinking and to remain there for more than a day. The first stage of liver deterioration seen in heavy drinkers is therefore known as fatty liver; it interferes with the distribution of nutrients and oxygen to the liver cells. If the condition lasts long enough, fibrous scar tissue invades the liver. This is the second stage of liver deterioration, called fibrosis. Fibrosis is reversible with good nutrition and abstinence from alcohol, but the next (last) stage ,cirrhossis, is not. In cirrhosis, the liver cells harden, turn orange, and die, losing function forever. The presence of alcohol alters amino acid metabolism in the liver cells. Synthesis of some immune system proteins slows down, weakening the body's defense against infection. Synthesis of blood lipids speeds up, increasing the concentration of triglycerides and high-density lipoproteins. In addition, excess alcohol adds to the body's acid burden and interferes with normal uric acid metabolism, causing symptoms like those of gout.
